Do I have to pay an excess for a windscreen claim?

It depends on your policy. Some insurers charge your normal excess, some have a separate windscreen excess, and some waive it for chip repairs.

The short answer

Check your policy schedule for a windscreen or glass excess. Many comprehensive policies charge an excess for a replacement but reduce or waive it for a chip repair. If the job costs close to your excess, paying directly may be simpler.

What to check in your policy

  • Whether you have glass or windscreen cover (sometimes an add-on).
  • The excess for a windscreen replacement.
  • Whether chip repairs have a reduced or no excess.
  • Whether a glass claim affects your no-claim bonus.

Claim or pay directly?

Ask us for a quote first. If the cost is close to your excess, paying directly saves paperwork. See what affects windscreen replacement cost.
