Is it legal to drive with a cracked windscreen in Queensland?

A small chip outside your line of sight usually isn't a problem on its own. A crack that interferes with the driver's view, or damage that weakens the screen, can make a vehicle unroadworthy in Queensland.

Long crack across a car windscreen

The short answer

Queensland roadworthy standards require a clear view for the driver. Damage in the area swept by the wipers in front of the driver, or cracks that affect vision or the strength of the windscreen, can fail a roadworthy inspection and attract a defect notice. If damage is in your line of sight, get it repaired or replaced promptly.

What the rules focus on

Queensland follows national vehicle standards for safety inspections. In practice, inspectors look at:

  • Damage in the driver's critical vision zone — roughly the area in front of the driver swept by the wipers.
  • Cracks that are long, spreading or reach the edge of the glass.
  • Chips large enough to distort vision.
  • Glass that is discoloured, delaminating or obscured.

For the exact current requirements, check the Queensland Government's roadworthy guidance or ask an approved inspection station. We can tell you whether your damage should be repaired or replaced.

Why a cracked windscreen is a safety issue

A windscreen does more than keep wind out. It helps hold the roof up in a rollover, gives the passenger airbag something to push against, and keeps occupants inside the car in a crash. A crack weakens all of that.

  • Cracks scatter light and cause glare, especially at night and into low sun.
  • A crack can spread suddenly with heat, cold air or a pothole.
  • Damaged glass is more likely to fail in a collision.

What to do now

  1. Cover a fresh chip with clear tape to keep dirt and water out.
  2. Avoid blasting the demister or air-conditioning onto the glass.
  3. Send a photo to 0498 700 798 and we'll tell you whether it can be repaired.
  4. If it needs replacing, we'll come to you so you don't have to drive on it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get fined for a cracked windscreen in Queensland?

Police and transport inspectors can issue a defect notice for a vehicle that isn't roadworthy, which can include significant windscreen damage. Repairing or replacing the glass clears the issue.

Will a chipped windscreen fail a roadworthy?

Small chips outside the driver's view often pass, but damage in the critical vision zone can fail. If you're selling a car and need a safety certificate, fix the damage first.

Can my chip be repaired, or does the windscreen need replacing?

As a rough guide, a small chip — about the size of a twenty-cent coin or smaller — that isn't on the edge of the glass or directly in the driver's line of sight can often be repaired. Long cracks, edge damage and smashed glass need a replacement. Send a photo and we'll tell you which.

Do you really come to me?

Yes. Every job is mobile. We work at homes, workplaces, depots, car parks and worksites across South East Queensland, so you don't need to drive a damaged vehicle anywhere.
