Can a cracked windscreen be repaired?
Sometimes. It depends on how long the crack is, where it is and whether it reaches the edge of the glass.

The short answer
Only short cracks — a few centimetres at most — that stay clear of the edge and the driver's line of sight can sometimes be repaired. Longer cracks, edge cracks and cracks that are spreading need a windscreen replacement.
Crack types at a glance
| Type | Repairable? |
|---|---|
| Short crack from a fresh chip | Sometimes |
| Long crack across the screen | No — replace |
| Edge crack (starts at the frame) | No — replace |
| Crack in the driver's line of sight | No — replace |
| Several cracks or a "star" with long legs | Usually replace |
If your crack is spreading
- Avoid temperature extremes on the glass.
- Avoid potholes and rough roads where possible.
- Book a windscreen replacement — a spreading crack won't stop on its own.
- Check whether it now affects your view — see Queensland rules.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't long cracks be repaired?
Resin can't reliably fill and bond a long crack, and the glass stays weakened along its length.
Is it legal to drive with a cracked windscreen in Queensland?
Queensland roadworthy standards don't allow damage that interferes with the driver's view, and a windscreen with significant cracks can make a vehicle unroadworthy. See our guide to cracked windscreen rules in Queensland.
Can I claim my windscreen on insurance?
Many comprehensive policies include glass cover, sometimes with a reduced or waived excess. Check with your insurer first, then let us know your insurer and claim number when you book. See our insurance guide.
